Matt VanHoosier's journey through the world of Golden Tee is a remarkable blend of dedication, nostalgia, and competitive spirit. From his early days playing Golden Tee 3D in high school and college to his current standing as a top player, Matt’s story is a testament to his commitment to the game and the community.
Starting with casual play as a teenager, and evolving into a driven competitor, Matt's quest for improvement led him to invaluable resources like the Golden Blab (one of the original internet GT forums, not the IT official podcast you know and love) and Tim Baker's hole strategy offerings. These informational tools helped form the foundation of Matt’s Golden Tee career.
His attention to detail and passion for the game became evident early on, setting the stage for his future in competitive play. Matt kept Tim Baker’s course strategies with him whenever he would spin a few games.
“I wrote them all down on a little notepad and would reference it while playing. I am certain I looked super cool!” joked Matt.
Matt’s first tournament experience at OTO’s in 2003 marked the beginning of his deep involvement in the competitive scene. Matt was involved in the early days with Power Events. His technical skills and desire to streamline tournament operations led him to create software that alleviated some of the logistical burdens. This innovation not only benefited him but also contributed to the efficiency and enjoyment of tournaments for others.
Over the years, Matt's relationship with the Power Events crew flourished, and his role in hosting Golden Tee Worlds and participating in numerous tournaments solidified his reputation in the community. His victories in purple brackets and consistent high placements in major events showcased his skill and perseverance.
The Music City Madness Open in August 2024 was a defining moment for Matt. Despite the intense competition and high-pressure matches, he demonstrated remarkable resilience. He was able to string together wins and find himself still alive in bracket play towards the end of the day.
“Once you make it to a streaming machine and the family back home can tune in, that’s always pretty cool. My kids still see making it onto Youtube as a major life accomplishment. My girlfriend Angie and her friends were on our patio rooting me on. That sort of support is great to have.”
His performance in the grand finals against Connor Franta highlighted his experience and strategic acumen. Matt played very safe while Connor tried to chase hole outs. Matt went into the match as a long time veteran facing off against one of the best up and comers in all of Golden Tee. It truly was the “old guard vs the new guard.”
Matt was able to secure victory in the first game by acing hole 5 of Missouri Hills and playing clean, setting the stage for an ultimate grand finals match. They were neck and neck going into hole 18 of the final match and Connor’s aggression finally came back to bite him. He watered and Matt found himself the purple bracket champion and proud new owner of a 2025 World’s Pass.
As Matt looks ahead, his goal to qualify for every “Big Gun” bracket at the Player of the Year tournament reflects his ongoing ambition and love for the game. Even though he will miss the Carolina Clash, his focus on performing well at the Holiday Classic underscores his commitment to maintaining a high level of play. It is one of Matt’s goals to make the Big Gun Player of the Year tournament. A feat that continues to get harder as time passes.
Matt VanHoosier’s story is far from over. This “old guard” isnt ready to give up his post just yet. His blend of veteran experience and competitive drive ensures that he will continue to make his mark in the world of Golden Tee.
