Pearl Lagoon No. 5

The level of difficulty increases here. The stakes get a little bit higher. The options increase. One could argue that Hole 5 of Pearl Lagoon is where the round really starts. This is the kind of drivable par-4 you want.

It is not easy. The green is surrounded by a bit of rough which is surrounded by far more water. Go for the green and miss and you’re looking at a par. But if you can stick the landing, your eagle can jumpstart something more.

In almost all instances, this hole will demand a cut shot of some kind. Became the trees on the right tend to get in the way, you’ll have to bring the ball from left to right. While trying to maneuver around the trees, it can be easy to overcut the shot. While you don’t want to miss left, either, don’t overdo it.

Distance here will play a critical role in your shot type. There are instances when your tee shot will be more than 300 yards. If that’s the case, a high-teed 3-wood or driver will be the ideal club. In most cases, you’ll be able to decide between a 5, 4 or 3-wood.

Do you use a club with more loft, perhaps avoiding clubbing up for extra carry? Do you finesse it with a little extra distance? It depends on what you’re comfortable with. Preferences here will vary player to player.

Regardless of how you attack this hole, be mindful of your spin. With your ball moving left to right, backspin will send your ball moving quickly right. Bite will send it moving a little less quickly right.

No spin at all comes with its own risks, but it’s also an option.

However you play this hole, find clubs that work in various situations, practice them and stay in your comfort zone. If you can do that, eagle can be yours.
