Turtle Island Hole No. 2


Don’t stop now; don’t let up. Stay aggressive while you can.

That should be your mindset on Hole 2 of Turtle Island. Hopefully you gave the cup on Hole 1 a solid run with your approach. And if all goes well—and you can avoid the fairway bunkers here—it should be the case again.

The only real obstacles standing between you and a birdie are the fairway bunkers. And even these aren't your typical red-siren obstacles. After all, with the right bunker bounce, you’ll have a nice clean look to the cup and a real chance at a holeout.

Ideally, however, it shouldn’t come to that. You shouldn’t put it to chance. There’s no need to bust out the heavy lumber, just sit back even (or behind) the sand traps and leave yourself with a look. Distance isn’t the problem here.

The main decision with this approach—regardless of where it comes from—it deciding whether to attack it with spin or not. The decision, in most instances, is pretty easy. Pins tucked in the front of the green should be tackled with Backspin or Bite. Pins near the back should be approached with no spin at all.

Much of this strategy depends on your comfort with a shot or a given pin. And if you feel like backspin will give you the best chance at a holeout, then approach it that way.

 

Don’t be overly aggressive and spin off the green or shoot it through the green, but set your sites on the pin and see if you can get it to fall. Assume birdie is the floor and look for more.
