Team USA Reclaims World Championship Cup

Chris Eversole Wins Second Title!

In its fourth year of existence, the 2005 Golden Tee World Championship once again proved to be the preeminent exhibition in all of video sports. 32 of the greatest Golden Tee players from around the globe convened at Friday's Front Row - a true all-American venue –in Orlando, Florida.

The festivities kicked-off Sunday, November 13th, when both teams attended a welcome breakfast at the beautiful Wyndham Resort in Orlando. All players were greeted by event emcee and IT Marketing Director, Gary Colabuono as they received their official World Championship uniforms, hat, wind jacket and commemorative gold card, duffel bag and a dozen Top-Flite strata golf balls. The meeting was followed by a day of formal practice for each team.

New to this year's World Championship schedule, players competed in a high-stakes Closest-to-the-Pin competition Sunday night prior to the Friday's welcome banquet. Reigning World Champion, Jeff Harlow, of Florissant, Missouri, won the contest and took home a $500 Golden Tee LIVE gift card! Andy Haas, of Stow, Ohio, was the runner-up and earned a $250 LIVE gift card for his efforts. 5-time Player of the Year, Dean Liakakos, of Dayton, Ohio, won $150 for third place and 2002 World Champion, Graig Kinzler, of Schaumburg, Illinois, took home $100 for fourth.

At the conclusion of the closest-to-the-pin contest, all players, family and friends enjoyed a delicious spread from Friday's prior to teeing-off in the 2-round seeding round. Players not only played to determine the bracketing order for Tuesday's competition, but also for a set of Top-Flite Ben Hogan C-F-T golf irons to the top shooter on each team. Andy Haas won the clubs on the American team after shooting -51 with 45,251 Great Shot Points, while Nick Feijo of Brantford, Ontario won on the international side with an impressive -51 and 44,658 Great Shot Points. TEAM COMPETITION .............................................................................................................................................

With the closest-to-the-pin and seeding rounds behind them, the players met early Monday morning to begin one of the biggest days of the year in Golden Tee Golf - the World Championship team competition. The traditional Ryder Cup-style format was used again in 2005, consisting of alternate hole, alternate shot and one-on-one play. The World Team upset Team USA in 2004 with a one-point victory, so the Yanks were playing in 2005 with fire in their eyes.

"We were outplayed by the underdogs last year," said Jeff Harlow in an interview prior to the event. "We don't intend on letting the cup slip away again in 2005!"

Harlow's team lived up to his words. In commanding fashion, Team USA reclaimed the cup with an impressive 38 to 10 victory! Each member of Team USA contributed at least one point to the 38-point tally and the highlight for the team included the first-ever clean sweep in round 5 where the Americans won every possible point!

While the score may not have reflected it, the World Team hung on every step of the way, only losing by one or two strokes in most instances. By contributing to the majority of the World Team’s points, the Canadians proved themselves as tough competitors for the matches to come.

With limited exposure to LIVE in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the odds were definitely in favor of Team USA and the dream team of past champions lived up to any expectations that were placed on them.

World Team captain, Martin Awatere, of Wellington, New Zealand, passed the cup to Jeff Harlow at the awards banquet held at Lombard's in Universal Studios that night.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION .....................................................................................................................................

As Tuesday rolled around, it was all business inside of Friday's Front Row. $57,000 in prizes - including a $15,000 payday for first prize - was on the line and everyone had a shot to win the 32-man head-to-head, single elimination event. Since the 2005 World Championship was the first major event on LIVE, the extra incentive of "first LIVE champion" also added more fuel to the players’ competitive fire.

The field consisted of 3 past World Champions, a few Player of the Year Champions and a variety of National Champions from around the world. It was anybody's game.

Two World Champions, Chris Eversole, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Graig Kinzler, of Schaumburg, Illinois, quickly found themselves moving through the American side of the bracket. Graig's highlight of the day came in an outstanding sudden death victory over Brian Bernhardt, where he holed-out #11 on Kangaroo Trail for the win. Chris went on to defeat Graig in a close match during the quarter-finals.

The former World Champs were joined by Dayton Root of Houston, Texas and Steven Tirey, of West Carrollton, Ohio during the semi-quarter finals. Each player proved themselves as silent assassins throughout the day. Dayton took out the likes of Jeff McClellan, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Sean Gervais, of Tampa Bay, Florida, while Steven's defining moment came in a stunning -28 to -26 victory over Andy Haas - one of the clear favorites to win the event. Dayton went on to defeat Steven in an outstanding match to move on to the semi-finals.

Chris defeated Dayton in the semi-finals on Cumberland Golf Course -22 to -19 to move on to the World Championship finals for the second time in his career. Another new World Championship feat!

It was all Canada on the World Team side of the bracket. Top qualifier, Nick Feijo faced one of the day's top shooters, Ben Zeidenberg, of Toronto in one of the most historic matches in the game! Ben defeated Nick on Whispering Valley by a score of -30 to -29! A World Championship record!

Ben would ultimately be joined by his Canadian comrade, Enzo Polidori, of Brantford, Ontario, after his impressive win over another World Championship favorite, Anthony Goertz, of Kitchener, Ontario. Enzo defeated Goertz in front of an excited crowd by the score of -24 to -22.

Enzo put out Ben's fire in the semi-finals after defeating him -23 to -20 on Heather Pointe. The two Canucks were tied all the way until the dreaded 17th hole where Ben just narrowly missed the green. Enzo won and moved on to play Chris in the finals.

Before the finals began, Dayton squared-off with Ben and defeated him -21 to -13 for third place honors. An exciting end for two players who put together a stunning string of performances throughout the weekend.

THE FINALS ..............................................................................................................................................................

Chris Eversole (USA) vs. Enzo Polidori (CAN)

In keeping with tradition, two victories were required to become the 2005 Golden Tee World Champion. While the immense pressures of the final match were nothing new to 2003 World Champion, Chris Eversole, they were just as intense.

There was no question that Enzo had the eye of the tiger. With score-after-score in the upper -20's, Enzo definitively proved himself to not only be one of the top player in Canada - but in the world as well.

Kangaroo Trail was selected as the first course in the championship match and Chris and had a mere one-stroke lead after nine. Chris expanded his lead to two-strokes coming into the 17th hole where Enzo ended up reclaiming a stroke back with an impressive birdie.

Down only one on the 18th hole, Enzo sticks the green and putts for eagle while Chris barely overshoots the green and is forced to chip and putt for birdie. With scores of -27 to -27, Enzo and Chris moved on to the back nine of Kangaroo trail for a sudden-death match.

After tying on #10 and #11, Chris overshot the 12th green and Enzo nailed it for the win! The first-ever win in the finals for the international team!

Match two was played on Coral Vista. Enzo went in the water twice early on in the match to give Chris a four-stroke lead. With the caliber of play between these fierce competitors, winning back four-strokes would prove to be nearly impossible. Chris went on to win -24 to -18. This marked the first time in history that a third round was necessary to decide the Golden Tee World Champion!

As fate would have it, the dreaded Heather Pointe was selected for the deciding match. All eyes in Friday's Front Row were glued to dozens of televisions and even the Golf Channel was there to record the action.

Chris took an early three-stroke lead after Enzo found some bad luck on hole #4. After reclaiming a stroke on #8, Ezno reached the turn down two strokes to the former World Champion.

Enzo saw a window of opportunity when Chris landed in a bunker on #12 and snatched back yet another stroke from Chris. The Canadian was down one going into the toughest finishing holes in the game.

Hole #15 proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Presented with a brutal left-to-right wind, Enzo elected to lay-up to set himself up for a birdie - a non-aggressive strategy while down one stroke. Hoping that Chris would find water on the hole to open it up for tie, Enzo watched intently along side a silent and anxious crowd.

In true champion fashion, Chris risked it all and stuck it for one of the most memorable eagles in his life. Friday's busted at the seams from the cheers that arose and Chris suddenly found himself poised for his second $15,000 payday.

With the hardest hole in the game - #17 - coming up, Chris needed to simply play conservative, mistake-free golf to win. An 18 mph wind dead in the face with a front pin location greeted Chris and Enzo on the hole. Chris elected to use a 7-iron with backspin and found himself in a bunker, while Enzo's 6-iron with backspin landed him in the fringe. Chris and Enzo both chipped safely on the right-10 degree green for pars. An amazing feat that can be appreciated by anybody who has ever been in this situation.

Only the 18th hole separated him from a second World Championship title, Chris stuck the tiny green regardless of another 18mph wind to WIN THE 2005 GOLDEN TEE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!
