32 of the greatest video golfers in the world met at Friday's Front Row in Orlando, Florida on November 18-19 to compete in the first-ever Golden Tee World Championship. Golden Tee, manufactured by Incredible Technologies, is the #1 coin-operated video game in the country, and is gaining popularity around the world. The event was a huge success, attracting reporters from the Associated Press, The Golf Channel, and Fox News.
On Monday, November 18, the 16-man Team USA competed against the World Team, comprised of 2 players from New Zealand, 2 from Australia, 4 from the United Kingdom, and 8 from Canada, in a Ryder Cup-like format. Team USA defeated the World Team by a score of 35-13. Leading the way for Team USA were Dan Gralapp of Arlington, TX, and Matt Estepp of Round Lake Beach, IL, both of whom went undefeated during the team competition. Dave Garnett and Tim Glenn, both of Toronto, Ontario, starred for the World Team as they tried to lead a comeback against the Americans.
Tuesday, November 19, was the tension filled head-to-head, single elimination competition to crown a Golden Tee World Champion. Ryan Fehrens of Oakville, Ontario was victorious in the World Team bracket while Graig Kinzler of Schaumburg, IL, defeated his opponents in the Team USA bracket. The two squared off in a best of three finale for $15,000. Kinzler defeated Fehrens 2 games to none to be named Golden Tee World Champion. Fehrens didn't go home empty handed though; he returned to Canada with $5,000. Tom Kostos of Pasadena, CA, won $3,000 for third place while Andy Brooks of England walked away with $2,000 for his fourth-place finish.
